IKOS began in a program called Park City CAPS, a hands-on engineering program that allows students to explore the real world during high school hours. Under the guidance of Mike Wong, three high school students, Mina Berglund, Paige DaBell, and Gates Lamb were challenged to create something new, creative, and manufactured out of recycled material. Using 3D printing, the team spent months crafting a shape designed to enhance creativity and spread spherical knowledge based off works by Peter Roberts. 7% of any profit is donated to education and water conservation groups. The company, where the students continue to consult and operate, brought IKOS to the market in January 2015 and has won the following awards:
2015 Kids Product of the Year– Creative Child Magazine
2015 Creative Play of the Year – Creative Child Magazine
2015 Dr. Toy’s Best Green Product
2016 Gold – Mom’s Choice Awards
2016 Kids Product of the Year – Creative Child Magazine
2016 Puzzle of the Year – Creative Child Magazine
